Transportation in Chengdu

Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan, is the political, educational and cultural centre of the province. The city is famous for its lack of sun, so don't come expecting to get a sun tan. Sometimes it is also called the "Land of Milk and Honey" because of its agricultural wealth. It is a transportation hub with a well-developed transportation system. You can get there by plane, train and long-distance bus. All of them offer great convenience to visitors.

Getting there

◎By Plane

Chengdu's main airport is Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport(Code: CTU), situated in the west port street of shaungliu county, Chengdu city, 18km from the downtown of Chengdu, is one of the main air hubs in China. It has many international and domestic flights with connections to all wind directions that can reach most cities of world.

Tips: Taxi fare from the airport to the city center averages ¥45. There is no extra charge for luggage or additional passengers.

The railway in Chengdu is very intensively, there are many railway transportations with connections to all wind directions that can reach most cities of China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Kunming in Yunnan, Chongqing and Xi'an. Details as the following:

There are many railway stations in Chengdu, details as the following:

Chengdu Station/ Chengdu North Station/ Line 1, Chengdu North Metro Station

It is called Chengdu Station on railway ticket, but is usually referred as "North Railway Station (Huo Che Bei Zhan)" by local people and some maps. It handles most long distance services. Trains to Dujiangyan(the city that holds Qingchengshan-Dujiangyan National Park) also depart from this station.

Chengdu East Station 

New station serving local Sichuan destinations and most high speed train to Chongqing. Not to be confused with an old freight station, which is slightly east of Chengdu North Station as marked on some older maps.

Chengdu South Station/Line 1, Chengdu South Metro Station

It services destinations in southern and southwest China.

Getting Around

◎By Subway

Subway is a very convenient way to get around the city. Chengdu has 4 subway lines, that is subway Line 1, subway Line 2, subway Line 3, subway Line 4. Subway Line5, Line6, Line7, Line9, Line10 are under construction. The subway system shuts down quite early (around 22:00), and opens again around 6:30am. The peak hours are 7:30—9:30,17:00—19:00.

◎By Bicycle

Bicycle is a very popular way to get around the city. Check for technical problems before starting out unless you want to be held responsible for it later. If you leave your bicycle, do so in one of the designated "bicycle parks", where it will be guarded over for a small fee. If you cannot find such a place, be sure to lock it securely against some structure. Be careful as the bike traffic flow can be intense. 

◎By Bus

Bus system in Chengdu is very cheap, is a very convenient way to get around the city. The card costs ¥20 and can be loaded with three types of credit. The first is cash. You will receive a 10% discount off the cash fare when using your card's cash. So a regular bus ride will cost ¥1.80 instead of ¥2. You can also load credits for this month and credits for next month. Each credit costs ¥0.50, and most bus rides use two credits (the increasingly rare non-air-condition buses cost one credit). So most rides then cost you only ¥1. 

◎By Taxi

Taxi is also a good way to travel around. Taxi fare is ¥8 on flag-fall for the older taxis ¥9 for the new ones, and increase at ¥1.9 per km after the first 2 kilometers. For rides from 10 to 60km the km fare is increased by 50% to compensate the taxi returning empty. During night time the starting price is ¥1 more and per km price is ¥2.20.
