History of Ping'an Zhuang Village

The ancestors of the Zhuang villagers moved to Ping'an about 650 years ago. The village has been isolated for serveral hundread years for no road from the valley going up the mountain. After the founding of People's Republic of China, for changing the villager's conditions of extreme poverty, the local government paved a road from Longsheng to Guilin, but the road condition was bad and a trip from Longsheng to Guilin would take at least five hours by bus. In 1980, the government paved a new road, it shortened half the trip time between Guilin and Longsheng. Foreign tourists have been coming to Ping'an Village since the late 1980s.

Language in Pingan

The villagers of Ping'an all speak local Zhuang language. The language has a little difference from other Zhuang language in Guangxi, seems to be closer to Vietnamese. Most villagers can speak Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua), with the tourism development these years, some family hotles' owners even have begun speaking English.

Traditional Zhuang Minority Buildings

Ping'an village still maintains the traditional three storied wood buildings with hemp railing. Most of the buildings have a history of more than 100 years. Built largely from timber, the houses are typically rectangular and three stories high, with a high-foot railing style construction. The domestic animals live in the first level and the villagers live in the upper levers. The adorable village is stacked up in layers along the hillside. Stone paths and staircases twist in and out of buildings. Water flows everywhere in streams, rivulets, cascades, and channeled in bamboo pipes.

Unique Costume and living Customs

The Zhuang people in Ping'an retain their ethnic features of costume and living customs. Men wear short gowns made of hand-loomed cloth; and women wear white shirts, black pants, and brightly colored cloth on their heads. The residents live as they did in old times - adults work in the fields, old people sit on their doorsteps all day, and kids play up and down the paths... When the guests visit their families, the local Zhuang people usually entertain the guests with baked bamboo rice and their home-made sweet rice wine.
