Hall for Abstinence (Zhai gong)

This hall was constructed in 1731 during the Qing dynasty.Two days before the Emperor offered a sacrifice to Heaven at the Temple of Heaven or to the earth at the Altar of the Earth, he would fast at the this hall for one day and then go to the Hall of Abstinence at the Temple of Heaven or Altar of the Earth to fast for another day. During the fast, he did not drink wine, or eat onions, chives or garlic.The eastern chamber in the hall displayed poems written by officials in praise of the solemn ceremonies held here.
