Beijing Forbidden City China

The Imperial Palace or the Palace Museum, commonly known as the Forbidden City, was built by the third Ming Dynasty Emperor Yong Le, who usurped the throne from his nephew and made Beijing the capital, ordered its construction, on which approximately 230,000 artists and a million workmen toiled for 14 years from 1406 to 1420. It had been the imperial home of 24 emperors of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. The palace is an elaborate museum that presents the largest and most complete ensemble of traditional architecture complex and more than 1,052,600 pieces of court treasures in all dynasties in China. The Forbidden City is one of the largest and best-preserved palace complexes in the world. It was designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1987.
