Datong Nine Dragon Wall

Located in central Datong City, Shanxi Province in China, the Nine Dragon Wall was built during the regime of the first Emperor of Ming Dynasty. With 45.5 meters long, 8 meters high and 2.02 meters wide, the Nine Dragon Wall in Datong is known as the largest and oldest Nine Dragon Wall existing in China. It is constructed as a screen wall in front of the mansion of the 13th son of the first Emperor of Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang.

 The beautiful wall was built of 426 brightly colored glazed titles and still remains intact owing to its perfect architecture and craft work. It is engraved with nine dragons and each dragon was painted in different color with its varying movement vividly. The space among dragons was full of stones and float grasses. The bottom of the wall carved 41 groups of pictures of two dragons playing with the peal. Besides, the exquisite design of green wave at bottom is as sea, blue background as sky and white as clouds. The waist of the wall was compound with 75 pieces of relieves made up of colored glazed brick, collecting lifelike and colorful cattle, horse, sheep, dog, deer, rabbit and so on.

In front of the Nine-dragon Wall, there is a reflecting pool with a stone bridge in the middle. The dragons are reflected in the water, and then the static dragons turn into the dynamic dragons. That displays the creativity of the craftsmen.
