Mount Wutai

Mount Wutai, literally "Five Plateau Mountain", also known as Wutai Mountain, is located in Wutai County of Xinzhou City, and is regarded as the primary one among the four sacred Buddhism Mountains in China. It has five flat-topped peaks, namely the northern, southern, eastern, western, and middle peaks. It is also called Qingliang (clear and cool) mountain because of its pleasant climate in summer. There are 47 temples altogether around the area. China’s oldest wooden structures are well preserved in Foguang Temple and Nanchan Temple. Wutai Mountain reflects the Buddhism development of China through its ancient architecture complex and rich Buddhism remains. Wutai Mountain was listed as a state level scenic spot by the State Council in 1982, and is in the tentative list of the First group of National Natural and Cultural Heritage issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in 2006. In June 2009, Wutai Mountain was inscribed in the list of the World Heritage as a cultural landscape by UNESCO.
