Questions & Answers about Erhai Lake

Asked by Ned L. Jacoby from USA 2014-03-12

I have been trying to find out about this for a long time and hope that you can help me: In the Spring of 1943 I was flying a USAF ATC C-87 cargo plane from Jorhat, Assam, to Kunming, China. Letting down out of the clouds at daybreak we were just approaching the southern end of the mountain range to the West of Lake Erhai. At the highest point on the mountain's southern end was a monastery that looked like it was a swimming pool carved out of the solid rock! Prayer flags were flying from long bamboo poles and there were doors cut into the rock walls! We saw no people! Perhaps the noise of our 4-engined airplane frightened them. // I have always wondered what is/was the history of this incredible place and hope you might be able to help me. Thanks, Ned Jacoby

According to your description, it may be the General's Cave (two km west of Xiaguan, the government seat of Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture). There is a temple built in honor of a Tang Dynasty general, Li Mi, hence the name. Please check the pics in your email to see if it is the place that you had seen in 71 years ago.
