Transportation in Chongqing

Chongqing, one of the four municipalities in China, is china's important center city. Also it is the famous historical and cultural city in china. It is called "mountain city" because of building around the mountain. It is also called "foggy city" because of its light rain and heavy fog in winter and spring. It is a transportation hub with a well-developed transportation system. You can get there by plane, train, ship and long-distance bus. All of them offer great convenience to visitors. 

Getting there

◎By Plane

Chongqing's main airport is Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport, situated in the Shunyi District of the city, about 21 kilometers northeast of Chongqing in Lianglu Town. The airport has flights to nearly all China major cities and some international flights to some of these cities:   Phuket, Sydney,Denpasar/Bali (charter), Helsinki, Jeju (charter), Phuket(charter), Hong Kong, Malé, Singapore, Siem Reap, Tokyo, etc. 

◎By Train

Chongqing as the country's fifth largest railway hub which is approved by the ministry of railways, during the "twelfth five-year", the railway transportation will implement the goal of "four hours get around and eight hours at sea". There are three major railway stations in Chongqing, details as following:

Chongqing Station (Chongqing Zhan - Caiyuanba)

Original station closest to the centre of Chongqing, handles many long distance trains from many destinations across China. Some services are being transferred to Chongqing North Station, due to planned redevelopment of the station. 

Chongqing North Station (Chongqing Bei Zhan)

Recently developed station provides high speed services to/from Chengdu. It has many long distance trains to many other cities in China depart and arrive here.

Chongqing West Station (Chongqing Xi Zhan)

Originally called Shapingba Station, provide limited services to local destination and eastern Sichuan province. Though departures and arrivals are somewhat limited at this station, it is quite useful for trips to nearby destations such as Guiyang or Dazhou.

◎By Bus

It's common to travel to Chongqing by bus, you can travel to Chongqing from almost anywhere by bus. It is quite convenient to get to Chongqing from Chengdu which is around 450km away. The two cities have expressways linking them and it costs RMB150 and takes about 4-5 hours for the trip. There are two major bus stations in Chongqing, details as the following:

Chaotianmen Station, Buses to points eastward (Fuling, Pengshui, Yunyang, etc.)

Chen Jiaping Station, Buses to the west and in particular towards Sichuan Province.

Getting Around

◎By Subway

Subway is a very convenient way to get around the city. It has been in operation since 2005, serves transportation needs in the city's main business and entertainment downtown areas. There are four Subway lines in Chongqing, details as the following:

Line 1: Chaotianmen to Shapingba, newly opened east-west heavy rail metro line. It is handy for visiting Ciqikou or Chaotianmen.

Line 2: Jiaochangkou to Xinshancun, original monorail line. It is convenient for visiting Stilwell Museum, Jiefangbei, Peoples Hall and Three Gorges Museum.

Line 3: Ertang to Jiangbei Airport, new monorail line running north-south. It is convenient for Chongqing North Railway Station, Jiangbei, Chongqing Garden Expo site and airport. 

Line 6: This will be the second heavy-rail subway and is currently under-construction. It is scheduled to open in late 2012 and will connect Nan'an, Yuzhong, and Jiangbei districts in         central Chongqing.

◎By Bus

Bus is a very convenient way to get around the city; it's very frequent and cheap. If you are going to one of the city centers in Chongqing city, simply ask each bus if they go there. There are four city centers, so be sure you know the name of the place you want to go to. 

◎By Taxi

Taxi is also a good way to travel around. They are relatively cheap (start by ¥8 and ¥1.8/km, ¥8.9 and ¥2.25/km after midnight) and can be easily found at anytime. A way to use taxis is to collect cards from hotels, then simply show the driver the one you want to go to or is nearest to your destination.  

◎By Boat

Chongqing is an important inner land harbor, Possesses advantaged golden waterway - the Yangtze River. It can provide water transportation to many domestic cities, such as Shanghai, Wuhan, Nanjing, Yichang, Wushan, etc.

The Chongqing Chaotianmen Dock, at the junction of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River, is one of the busiest ports in China. Chongqing is the best starting point for a Yangtze River Cruise. Taking a cruise ship from Chongqing down the Yangtze River to Wuhan Yichang is now a popular tourist trip.
