Aba County

Aba County (Ngawa County) is located in the remote northwestern part of the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous prefecture, Sichuan Province, on the border with Qinghai and Gansu, the eastern end of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The capital is Ngawa City.

Aba County is a resort and religious center, including the famous Tibetan temples, wildlife refuge scenic area, mysterious and miraculous Tibetan Buddhist culture, and plateau wetland reserve and ecosystem scenic spot. It attracts hundreds of thousands of Tibetans every year. It is said that Aba County reserves the most original living style of Tibetans. This is the largest county in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture and is the second largest Tibetan Buddhist gathering site after Lhasa. It is known as the “Little Potala Palace” and is home to 42 monasteries. It is estimated that one third of the 60,100 population are monks!

Aba County is an excellent place to experience Tibetan culture. There are numerous festivals and activities throughout the year.

There are some buildings that are over 1000 years old will give you a taste of the past and of the local Tibetan culture. Accommodation options range from home stays to cheap hotels to 3* locally run hotels. Besides, bus connections are available through Songpan and Ma Er Kang.

"Aba" literally means drummer in Tibetan. Aba County has a long history. For thousands of years, a multitude of Chinese ancient ethnic minorities, including Qiang, Sienpi (Xianbei), Tubo and Hui, had worked collaboratively on the development of Aba, leaving the land abundant culture accumulations of ethnic minorities. The prefecture was changed into Aba Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in 1955 and Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in 1987.

Aba County belongs to the sub-humid cold temperate monsoon plateau climate, clear wet and dry seasons. Climate of the prefecture is complex and varied for the complicated geography and landform. The northwestern tableland area has a continental plateau climate with long and chilly winter and cool humid summer. The annual average temperature is 0.8-4.3C (33 -40F). The climate of the southeastern alpine valleys ranges from the temperate to the frigid climatic types with annual average temperature of 1-5C (34-41F).
