China's Snow Town
China's Snow Town (Xue Xiang) is located in Shuangfeng Forest Farm, under the jurisdiction of Changting Town, Hailin City (county-level) of Mudanjiang City (prefecture-level), Heilongjiang Province. It is at an elevation of 1,500 meters above the sea level, and covers an area of 500 hectares. Due to the influence of the warm current of the Sea of Japan and cold fronts from the Lake Baikal, the snow season here is up to seven months every year and snow thickness may reach around 2 meters. The snow here is famous for its thickness and high viscosity. Annual autumn and winter, the snow here is in very large amount, forming a unique scene of "snow curtains". With the country's largest snowfall regional, it is known as “China’s Snow Capital”.
During the snow period, China's Snow Town is covered by snow; houses here show a variety of shapes like horses, lying rabbits, turtles, giant mushroom and so on. When evening comes, tourists can participate in a bonfire party together with local people and sleep over at their homes. The night view is particularly beautiful; enthusiasts, birches, cedrus, little huts, red lanterns, wattle wall, and sunrise are all wonderful themes for photography.
China's Snow Town has the North's highest mountain, the densest woodlands, the thickest snow, the most clean and transparent sunshine, and the most honest life of lumberjack. Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit China's Snow Town is from December to early March of the next year, but try to avoid the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) because many Chinese tourists flock there for skiing, snowmobiling, hiking and photographing. It's hard to book hotels and their prices are very expensive during the festival.
Getting there
◎By train from Harbin
There are many daily trains to Hailin City from Harbin, the prices (hard seat) ranging from CNY 28 to CNY 50. You can take some of these trains: K479, K631 or K622/623. In Hailin City, you can hire a taxi to Changting Town and then to the snow town.
◎By bus/coach
1) From Mudanjiang
There is only a daily special route bus/coach to China's Snow Twon from Mudanjiang City. It starts at 14:00 and arrives in the town around 19:00. If you miss this special route bus/coach, you can take the regular bus/coach (a lot of) to Changting Twon first and then change a mini-bus/taxi to the snow town.
2)From Changting Town (Changting Zhen)
You can find 2 daily buses to China's Snow Town at Changting Forestry Bus Passenger Station (Changting Lin Ye Ke Yun Zhan). One starts at 6:30 am, the other starts at 13:30 pm. They take about 3 hours to the snow town and their prices are CNY 14. The special route bus/coach to China's Snow Twon from Mudanjiang City will pass Changting Town around 4:30 pm, you can also take this bus to the snow town from Changting Town.
◎Rent taxi, car or mini-bus
1. It takes about 1.5 hours to rent a taxi or mini-bus to get to the snow town from Hailin City. You can bargain over the price with the drivers. Usually, taxi is CNY 80-100 for 4 people, 1 people may be cheaper relatively.
2. Rent a mini-bus to China's Snow Town from Harbin is around CNY 1,500 (round-trip), in the peak season the price will be double or more expensive. It takes about 6 hours to get there.
