How to Get Datong

Datong is the second largest city in Shanxi Province, it is known as "coal town" and "phoenix". It has a well-developed transportation system. You can get there by plane, train and long-distance bus. All of them offer great convenience to visitors.

How to Get Datong

◎By Plane

Datong's main airport is Datong Airport, situated in the north of Beijiazhao town of Datong County in Datong city, about 17 km to downtown. It is the second largest civil airport in Shanxi Province. It offers air services to Beijing, Shanghai, Changzhi and Guangzhou and vice versa.

◎By Train

Datong railway station is situated in No.1 Zhanqian Street. Datong, as the main coal producing city in China and the coal is mainly transported by train; it has several trains connected with 25 cities in China including Beijing, Guangzhou, Xian, Hangzhou and Taiyuan. 10 passenger trains start at this Railway Station and the other stops over it and head for Beijing, Hangzhou, Taiyuan and Shuozhou (in Shanxi).

◎By Bus

There are three passenger transport stations in Datong, details are as the following:

Datong Bus Station

Located at No.20 Yantong Road (West) with bus No.11 reaching there. Long-distance buses here are mainly heading for the counties in the southeast of the city such as Hunyuan County, Lingqiu County and Guangling County.

Xinnan Passenger Transport Station

Located at No.699 Xinjian Road (South) in the city and can be reached by City-bus No.19, 28, 30. Buses in Xinnan Passenger Transport Station mainly head for Beijing, Tianjin, Taiyuan, Luoyang, Jinan, Shenyang, Xian and Zhengzhou.

North Passenger Transport Station

About 200 meters (219 yards) to the west of the city's Railway Station. Buses here are mainly heading for the cities and counties in Hebei and Inner Mongolia. The ones to Taiyuan and Shuozhou are also available here.

Getting Around Datong

◎By Bus

Bus is a very convenient way to get around the city. There are plenty of public buses running to every corner of the city, some bus details are as the following:

Bus 4

runs from the train station into town (6th stop (Sipailou)for 9 Dragon wall, 7th stop (Qingyuan street, bus sign “Youth palace”) for Huayuan Monastery and Youth Hostel , 8th stop for Red Flag square. The final stop on bus line 4 is the start of bus line 3.

Bus 3

Runs from the Xinkaili bus station (final stop of bus 4) to the Yungang Caves (end of the line).

Bus 15

runs from train station to near the main bus station (the fifth stop from train station, from that bus stop walk ahead to crossroads, turn left and main bus station (Datong bus station) is just ahead on left. )

Bus 30

Runs from the train station to the last stop (45+ mins) of south bus station. 

Tips: Buses within Datong are ¥1. Trips to the Yungang Caves are ¥1.5.

◎By Taxi

Taxi is also a good way to travel around. Short trips in town cost at least 6 Yuan. From the train station to Huayan Monastery in the centre of town is about 8 Yuan.
