Wuyishan Fact Sheet

Wuyishan City is a county-level city, located in the northwest of Fujian Province, is the only emerging tourist city named after famous mountains in Fujian.

History

Wuyishan City has a long history. According to archaeological data indicate that nearly 4,000 years ago, the territory had been inhabited by ancestors. It corresponds to the former Chong'an County, formed in Northern Song Chunhua five years (AD 994 years).

Location

Wuyishan City, located in the north of Fujian Province, at the junction of Fujian and Jiangxi provinces.

Administrative Divisions

There are three towns, 4 townships, three streets, four agricultural tea plantation, and 115 administrative villages under its jurisdiction. 

Geomorphology

In the territory of Wuyishan City, East, West, and North are mountains, ridges and peaks, South-central relatively flat, which belongs to mountainous and hilly areas. The altitude of downtown is 210 meters. The terrain tilt from the northwest to the southeast, the highest Huanggangshan(2158 meters), Known as the " East China Roof "; the lowest Xingtian town(165 meters). The height difference between the highest and lowest point is 1993 meters, the big difference terrain height is the most in Fujian Province. The main part of the famous Wuyi Mountain Scenic Area and Wuyishan National Nature Reserve is located in the territory of Wuyishan City.

Climate

Wuyishan belongs to subtropical monsoon climate zone. The climate is quite different within all year round. Annual precipitation is 1,960 mm, with an average annual temperature of 19.7 ℃. In the late spring and early summer (May-June), the rainy season comes here. Summer, the weather is hot. In autumn, it is cool, low rainfall and dry. When in winter, it is in low temperatures, often frost, ice and snow.

Resources

Wuyishan is a famous forest region in southern China, which forest coverage rate reached 79.2 percent, and with 318.2 million acres of forest land. 

Wuyishan is the famous tea producing areas in southern Chinese. Is the only Chinese tea culture and arts village, and is the birthplace of Chinese oolong tea and black tea. Wuyi Yancha ranked in the top ten teas in China; its traditional production process has been included in the national intangible cultural heritage. Wuyishan existing 10 acres tea plantations, with an annual output of 4,900 tons of tea, which total production value reaches 150 million yuan. With unique rock rhyme, Wuyi Yancha has renowned Chinese and foreign, which tea king "Dahongpao" is the world best.

There are Jianxi, Chongyang River, Nanpu River, maxi four major rivers in Wuyishan, which reserves large potential of water resources. In addition, Wuyishan City has found a variety of minerals. 

Ethnic and Religion

There are 26 Ethnics settling in Wuyishan. Han is the vast majority and she is the majority minority ethnic. There are four religious in Wuyishan City, including Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity and Catholicism.

Culture

Wuyishan city's dialect is relatively consistent, belonging to Taiwanese. The 14-meter-high sculptures made of red granite is a sign of Wuyishan City, located in the junction of urban areas and Wuyishan scenic. In addition, Wuyishan City is prevalence bazhuqiao, caitouhui, hechasu, hanshan and kaishan and so on folk activities.

Natural and Cultural Heritage

A local subsection of the Wuyishan Mountain range, which forms the entirety of the geological and political divide between the provinces of Fujian and Jiangxi, is a front-rank national park called simply Wuyi Mountains. Since 1999 the park zone has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the world's natural and cultural heritage.

Cultural sites within the zone include the original cultivation ground of the Dahongpao tea variety, and a villa retreat used by Zhu Xi, a Confucian revivalist scholar-official of the rump or Southern Song Empire.

South of the zone, just short of the City's border with Jianyang City, is a major archaeological excavation of the vanished Yue nation.

Tourism

Wuyishan City is an emerging tourist city. There is well-known internationally renowned Wuyishan Scenic Area (Mount Wuyi), the ruins of Ancient Han, Wuyishan Ziyang Academy, Xiamei Village and other famous attractions.
