Daxu Ancient Town

Daxu Ancient Town, once called Changan City and Lutian City, was one of the “four ancient towns” in ancient Guangxi. The town was originally founded in 200 AD, it got well development in Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) and took on an air of prosperity in the period of the Republic of China (1912-1949).

Daxu Ancient Town lies on the east bank of the Li River, in the south-east of Guilin, about 18 km from the centre of Guilin. Due to its good location, Daxu Old Town was not only an important transportation hub in old times when boat was the most important transportation means, but also a famous distribution centre for trade.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, being the commercial premier in the area, Daxu Ancient Town began to flourish. Over the past centuries, it had been one of Li River's four most important harbors. Most of its inhabitants were traders and Daxu's market was well-known all over southern China. It was always a busy trading center in the old times. There are still 13 docks along the old street from which you can imagine its prosperity in former days.

Daxu Ancient Town still retains in its antique style from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The old flagstone street, covered with blue stone, lined with old residences, shops and stalls, extends two kilometers along the Li River through the town, and the well-preserved old houses adorn both sides of the street. These buildings were used as quarters for businessmen in the past times, which structures are outstanding for their magnificence, refinement and practicality.
