Chengdu Panda Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
Located in northern suburb of Chengdu, 10 km away from the urban, the Chengdu Panda Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (also commonly known as Chengdu Giant Panda Base) is a non-profit organization engaged in wildlife research, captive breeding, conservation education, and educational tourism. The panda base covers an area of 1,000 acres, is an important place for Chinese giant pandas ex situ conservation. Pandas, golden monkeys and other wild and endangered species live and breed here.
Chengdu Panda Base was founded in 1987. It started with 6 giant pandas that were rescued from the wild. By 2008, it had 124 panda births, and the captive panda population has grown to 83. To assist other institutions holding giant pandas, Chengdu Panda Base provides technical support and sends experts to assist with care, rearing, and breeding. So that all giant panda researchers can share their knowledge, Chengdu Panda Base hosts the Giant Panda Annual Technical Meeting, inviting researchers from all over the world to share information to improve captive management for the conservation of giant pandas.
The stated goal of Panda Base is to "be a world-class research facility, conservation education center, and international educational tourism destination." Keeping the public aware of the status of endangered species, the necessity of protecting the natural habitats, and promoting the harmonious between human, animal and nature are the most important educational functions of the Chengdu Panda Base. Now, Chengdu Panda Base has partnered with many organizations in improving ways to conserve giant pandas.
In addition to the panda and other rare animals, there are Souvenir Store—Home of the Giant Panda, Shopping Zone Area in the Tourist Service Center ,Giant Panda Bookstore and Giant Panda Catering Facilities in the Chengdu Panda Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
As a demonstration project of giant panda ex-situ conservation, the Chengdu Panda Base has not only dedicated itself to giant panda conservation, but has also made great efforts to combine natural scenery and man-made landscapes to create wonderful and humane living areas for giant pandas, red pandas, and other Chinese endangered animals.
